Welcome

Hello and welcome to the web site for the International Conference on the History of Freemasonry (ICHF).

The ICHF has provided, for the first time, an international forum for all scholars whose work in some way touches on Freemasonry.

Masonic history is a developing field of academic research and ICHF is intended to stimulate and focus on new research into all aspects of this most interesting area of human activity.

The first conference was held over three days commencing 25th May and ending 27th May 2007. A report of the conference will available on another page in due course.

Due to the success of the first conference it has been decided to hold another 29 - 31 May 2009. It is now anticipated that ICHF will henceforth be held biennially. This will, hopefully, assist those whose wish to submit a proposal by providing sufficient time but also prepare the paper to be delivered at the conference if their proposal is accepted. In this respect those intending submitting proposals are positively encouraged to use a visual medium such as Power Point. To download the First Announcement and Call for papers for papers for the 2009 conference click here or on previous links.

2009 is a very special year for Scotland and Scottish Freemasonry as it is the 250th Anniversary of the birth of the National Bard and Freemason - Robert Burns (1759 - 1796). For this reason ICHF will be held in Edinburgh for a second successive occasion before moving on. ICHF also takes this opportunity to encourage the submission of proposals about the life and work of Robert Burns especially in relation to his Masonic activities.

The web site is in the process of being updated to reflect the post 2007 conference and the changes which have taken place at the Centre for Research into Freemasonry at the study of University of Sheffield. Click here for a few more details or on the previous link.

Please bear with us whilst this work is being undertaken.
